ICBC Successfully Launches the First IPv6 Application for the Next-Generation Internet

ICBC has fully completed the technical transformation of its international web portal (www.icbc-ltd.com) for public services, supporting both IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). The system under operation is stable with all technical indicators meeting expected requirements. The upgrade is believed to make ICBC the first large domestic financial institution providing IPv6 website services.

IP address is known as the sole identification of internet devices, all of which must be assigned with corresponding IPs in the internet eco-cycle. Compared to the currently widely-used IPv4 protocol, IPv6 protocol was developed to resolve the problem of rapid exhaustion of available addresses for increasing internet devices. The problem resembles the coding rules of car license plates. When the 6 pure digit plates can no longer meet the demand of growing number of cars, a new-type license plate with combination of numbers and alphabets subsequently appears. With the emerging of technologies of the Internet of Things (loT), the drastically increasing internet devices also face the similar problem and, as a result, the global promotion of IPv6 is imperative. In December 2016, the State Council released the 13th Five-Year Plan on National Informatization, which specifies the goal of massive deployment and commercial application of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) by 2018, and of comprehensively evolving and upgrading the Internet to IPv6 by 2020. Recently, General Office of the Communist Party of China and General Office of the State Council have jointly issued The Massive Action Plan on Advancing the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), requiring an accelerated promotion of massive IPv6 deployment to build the next-generation internet featuring high speed, wide popularity, full coverage and intelligence. This will speed up the building of a cyber-powerful country, the process of national informatization, as well as the economic and social development, thus gaining a new competitive edge in future international competition.

As a widely-recognized basic technology for the next-generation internet, explained by an ICBC official, the massive deployment of IPv6 requires a simultaneous development of the whole internet eco-cycle and a matching internet transformation of terminals, networks, servers, software, etc. Therefore, ICBC made a deployment in advance, which includes actively conducting research on IPv6 technology as well as its application and deployment, and selecting the international portal as a running pilot. During the piloting process, ICBC tech team, together with the IPv6 communications operators, made innovation in building a new set of website system full compatible with IPv6 for internet access. As a result, the new model PCs and mobile phones which support IPv6 can have a smooth access to the ICBC International portal. Since the launch, ICBC has already detected visits from multiple countries such as the U.S. and Britain.
