Australian Unemployment Rate Rises to 5.8 Percent

The Australian unemployment rate has shifted up to 5.8 percent in December, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.

Around 13,500 new jobs were created during the period, exceeding the expected mark of 12,000 held by market analysts.

The amount of people in full time work rose, with 9,500 new positions filled, and the part time workforce got a small boost with 4,500 jobs created.

Participation rates were up, with 64.7 percent of people either actively employed or currently seeking work, which was a 0.1 percent increase from the November numbers.

The market should not be too affected by the results, Steve Daghlian, market analyst at CommSec, told Xinhua.

"It's not the sort of data that you would expect would really influence the market, because it wasn't a huge beat, or a huge miss." Daghlian said.

But Daghlian was quick to point out that the market may have been buoyed by the performance of biotech giant CSL, who were up 10 percent in Thursday's trade.

"If it wasn't for CSL, the market would be completely flat, or possibly only slightly stronger." Daghlian said.

The S&P/ASX200 is sitting at 5695.8, up 0.29 percent, at 1206 local time AEDT on Thursday.
