Five World Champions from Guangdong Greet Asian Games with Guangzhou College Students

A special vocal group, "Five Champions from Guangdong" went to Guangzhou Sport University to share their career stories and greet the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games with the students.

"Five Champions from Guangdong" is the first vocal group in China whose members are all world champions. They are all world champions from Guangdong: diving champions Sun Shuwei and Yu Zhuocheng, sanshou champion Kang Yongang, fencing champion Dong Zhaozhi and badminton champion Yu Jinhao.

On that day, because of Dong Zhaozhi and Yu Jinhao's work schedule conflicts, only three members of the group appeared. To greet the arrival of Guangzhou Asian Games, they recorded a single, "Go China", dedicated to 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. The lyrics say:"Every drop of sweat concentrates all the hardship; every start of sailing is another goal..."

"This song represents our attitude towards our new life after retirement from sports competition; it is a new start," said Yu Zhuocheng, the founder of "Five Champions from Guangzhou". Yu Zhuocheng began to learn diving from 8 years old in Xinhui, Guangdong. He has received more than 40 medals in his 18 years of diving career, including 11 world championships.

"Although there is a small regret that I have never got an Olympic gold medal in my sports career, I already felt that I have demonstrated a Chinese athlete's spirit by attending the Olympic Games." Yu Zhuocheng shared this experience with the college students, encouraging them not to give up easily when the things are not going perfectly.

Talking about the birth of "Five Champions from Guangdong", Yu Zhuocheng said, people in all walks of life were cheering for the Olympic Games in various ways, Guangdong athletes also wanted to do something for that grand event, so the group was born.

The "son of south Guangdong" Kang Yonggang was the champion of the first Sanshou World Cup and has won all the competitions against foreign contestants. When sharing his training experience with the college students, Kang Yonggang said, he began to learn sanshou at 12 years old with his brother. Later his brother could not stand the hardship of training and gave up. At that time in China, many people were learning martial arts. Kang Yonggang was young and aggressive, dared to challenge. He persevered with the training and the coach also liked him for this "sheer animal strength". And finally he became a wold champion. He encouraged the college students to be aggressive.

The diving champion Sun Shuwei became a national champion at the age of 13, an Asian champion at 14, a world champion at 15, and at 16, he became a champion at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Looking back at his career of hard training, Sun Shuwei said, at that time, he was not among the ones with the best figure, but he trained very hard and finally got good results. He encouraged the college students not to afraid of hardship with his own experience.

After the three champions finished their stories, they were greeted with long applauses. "This communication with the world champions let me deeply felt that once we have made a decision, we must persevere and work hard in order to get the final results," said Gu Feng, a class of 2008 Physical Education Department student of Guangzhou Sport University.
